I've just hired an 18-200 VR for my Paris trip this weekend, can't believe how tiny it is! Bit slow compared to the 50mm but hopefully the VR will claw back a couple of stops. Never used VR so that will be interesting.

I was shooting at 50mm, and very close to the fireworks, so there was no way I could get them in frame.

Gave the D90 a good high ISO workout this evening, had it in my bag and just grabbed it for some 'smash and grab' type shots whenever something interesting appeared (the sort of thing I like to do in the daytime), the beauty of this was that I could do the same in darkness as I could in the day...

I've always wondered what/why that is. I always shoot at ISO200 but my really slow panning shots on my D50 were full of noise and grain when viewed full size (as if I was shooting at a much higher ISO). There certainly is some noise in these shots but the conditions were awful; horrible murky...

The heavier the better for me (within reason!) when it comes to panning, particularly as I don't use a monopod and 99% of events are in annoyingly strong wind in this country. The 120-300 is pretty much on the limit, but especially now I have a grip it's a really nice balance.

Agree with most of that, won't really make any difference to the majority of my photos (I never expected it to) and to be honest unless you spent megabucks and went full frame I don't think you would ever really notice a huge difference. Most of it is down to making everything quicker and more...

Easy answer: Hold all the cameras in your price range. You will probably answer the question yourself after doing that. Photographically they are going to be essentially identical, none of them will give you better pictures than the other.
