I loved chicago, fantastic place, recognise a lot of those places too.
Don't take this the wrong way, but i think the pictures look a bit flat. Maybe the use of a polorizer or some PP to make the colours pop.
For pans I'd go with a starting shutter speed of 1/200, and gradually reduce the speed as you get more confident. This will give more sense of speed. You should be able to get usable results down to about 1/100 or even lower.

Loved mine, If you're an occasional motorsport shooter it will more than do the job. HSM focusing is normally very quick, but mine was the non hsm version. Cracking lens though.
If i were you i'd buy the sigma 70-300mm dg apo for motorsport and the tamron 17-50mm f2.8. Very underated, and can be had for about £250 new.
Optically its not far off the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 which is approx £1000 new.
