Thats down to lack a 3G capable local cell mast or network over loading. http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ Will help you find your nearest mast. You need to look for a 2100/2200 capable mast by the way. Not 100% up to date but very helpfull. Bear in mind buildings and valleys hills etc...
