I did a 172 o/s shaft the other day with an ebay stretch boot. I'd definitely recommend taking the shaft out the car and sticking it in a vice. Soak the boot in boiling water for 10 mins beforehand too, softens it up a bit and helps stretch over the cone.
Pulleys removed to get that block out, but then what about the new complete engine with pulleys fitted?
Drain the gearbox oil, take both shafts out and lift the lot out the top :)
I'd vote bolting the gearbox back on and lifting the block and box out together. It'll be even more of a pain in the arse trying to get the (built up) engine back in with the gearbox in situ.

Just had a catch up, I'd not seen the last couple of pages. Are the swivel hub bearings not replaceable on their own, hence a complete hub? Awesome design if so! One of mine was getting fairly bad too, just before I jumped ship.
