To be fair mate - nope. Quality comes at a price. You can only go so far with a compact before the upgrade comes in 4 figures and then when you master that - you get sensational pics.

Chris, indeed they are of SLR quality but in all honesty, I think the only way you will get better now is the progression to a D-SLR. A normal SLR isn't really worth it when you take into account the cost of development even if the body is cheap.
Remember you can always buy the body first and...
I'd say theres an electric gremlin in there somewhere mate. Maybe a faulty stalk.
However, mroe likely, the little electrical connector that connects to the gear lever to detect when you put it in reverse is on the blink.
