I think I'd go for the 70-200 F4... or better still, get you, me and Rich to a central event and have a go with both. A lens is, in some circumstances, only as good as the operator. I've taken some asolute tripe with my 350D and some stunners. Looks like you're more than competent so I suggest...

Chris - why not pick up a 300/350D and use it for close work whilst saving for a good lens? Keep the FZ20 for now.

To be fair mate - nope. Quality comes at a price. You can only go so far with a compact before the upgrade comes in 4 figures and then when you master that - you get sensational pics. What were the pics you linked to taken with? lens and camera please bud.

Chris, indeed they are of SLR quality but in all honesty, I think the only way you will get better now is the progression to a D-SLR. A normal SLR isn't really worth it when you take into account the cost of development even if the body is cheap. Remember you can always buy the body first and...

I'd say theres an electric gremlin in there somewhere mate. Maybe a faulty stalk. However, mroe likely, the little electrical connector that connects to the gear lever to detect when you put it in reverse is on the blink.
