You remember wrong. I got mine off my Cup with my method. Piece of piss. The top of the gearstick is metal and the inside of the knob is nylon with grooves cut in it. Keep twisting the knob with a towel very tight and itll start to come loose and then itll pop off. If your a bit of a woos...

Put a towel on it and use some elbow grease.
