If you look down where the column goes, theres a rubber sleeve. Pull it up then get a mate to rock the steering wheel. You will see the play, its basically the part that fits into the sleeve.

AI606 is a quality bit of kit! Ive never had any trouble with mine and it works a gem, you cant go wrong with TOAD. I had a clifford on my previous motor and it was a pain in the fecking ass.
Stiff steering is good... its all very well having power steering when parking, however on the open road i think its nice to have a firm steering like feel.. All decent performance cars have this characteristic.

16vgaz - dont give up fella! i was in the same boat as you when i was looking a 16v myself!! It took me 6months in the end to find an example i was happy with. Sadly not all 16vs are looked after aswell as some of the Williamss out there.
