Yeah i agree it's adequate but not the best method which is the point I make - wireless has it's pitfalls as you know. As you say, you need a good wireless setup in the first place but even then is sustainable to interference.
I've used Microsofts DPM 2007 and found it was really good once you get it setup correctly on a dedicated server.

How are you connected up?
True 1080p video's you will struggle with wifi, in theory it should work but Wireless N isn't that great on throughput on equipment I've tested and also online reviews confirm this.
Got any money to spend? do you have a data cabinet? with racks?
Router -> 24port gigabit Switch -> Patch Panel -> Cat5e Network Sockets -> done.

I wouldn't worry about WDS (Wireless Distribution System) it's just used to link AP's together.
Just go with the same SSID as above and make sure all the settings are right.
Yes this should work - the homeplugs are just a bridge device and treat your powerline as an ethernet cable. Speeds can vary but they will be faster than your broadband speed so you won't notice any slow down.

The i5 is a much newer mobile processor and can carry out 4 threads unlike the T9600 2 threads. Also the i5 carrys many more features eg: Hyper-Threading.

Yeah but if you clear the laptop you end up with one copy on an external HDD which if that fails you lose everything.
