Hi Guys, Is there a good shock and spring setup for a ph1 172 without going to coilovers or am I best sticking to standard and then getting something like the spax 519's? The car has been bought to be mainly run as a track toy so I am only really concentrating on good tyres which are sorted...
Just bought a flame red ph1 172, 125k, loads of history, 2 years left on the cam belt (just did the auxiliary) 4 months tax and 12 months MOT for £650. Put two new tyres on it and replacing the discs and pads (rears I got brand new free from a mate) and I'll be going down the ds2500 and brembo...
I'm guessing from reading the new MOT guidlines that some of it will come down to the individual car, clearly stripped out track cars that are still road legal that have no airbags, normal seat belts etc will have to be looked upon in a different way. That is unless they are going down the same...
So Chip, the question is do I now need to get a Cat fitted at the cost of £200+ to my system? I'm sure I can get a pass legally but its more a concern as to whether the cat needs to be there or not. I guess as someone else said until these MOT's start happening we don''t know what the fail...
Unfortunatly gents Renault's in general at the moment are depreciating rapidly and the used car market has also been hit hard, combine the two and you have cars that were over £15k ten years ago worth less than £1000 now (PH1 172's) As for 182's alot of them are around 7 years old and again have...
Does the car need to have a cat fitted on it if it came as standard? I have a de cat system like most people on here. Does that mean I need one to have the emissons test pass? As for my airbag warning light I'll have a fiddle with the wires and see if that sorts it.
More a question of whether you'd change the standard ph1's setup to goto say a springs and dampers or coilovers. I've run the likes of KWV2's but not sure whether for the £££'s I'd need to spend I'd get a massive benefit.
Funny story I was chatting to a guy who used to pit crew a VW 1600 car and he said they all ran Rainsports cut down to 3mm of tread. I have to say I found they gained alot of heat and did a good job. I'd need to have a proper look at them to see if they have melted at all but didn't see any sign...
Cheers for the advice guys, guess I'll go down the Brembo route with the DS pads. And I guess the standard rear setup does the job well enough not to need changing.
Having done a day at Donington on Sunday and had four seasons in one day I can say for certain that the Rainsport's are spot on in the dry and the wet.
Fred you seem to be an expert, what would you recommend, I am mainly using the car for track days, found my standard stuff a bit weak at Donington this weekend and fading towards the end of the sessions.
I had a MKII golf GTI that had blue indicatiors all round including the rear clusters, I put 17's on it about 6 months before lowering it (looked like a bloody tractor), Jetta front end (cheap Rallye look) and the legendary DTM rear box that lasted about 2 weeks before getting gone. I also...
I have just bought a W plate phase 1 in Flame Red, first 172 I ever drove back in 2001 was a flame red 172 and I saw this one and had to have it. Sorry no pictures yet.
I've just put Uniroyal rainsport on the front and have PE2's on the rear. Seems to drive fine I just have to get used to the car as I have only had it for a week and haven't driven a 172 hard since I was selling them.
