if its where the housing meets the cylinder head its a sealant if its where the thermostat actually is housing bewteen the platic and the metal its a rubber seal.
Fred on here had one of these noises. hes a renault specailist and he could even figure it out. his noise was like yours and it comes from the inlet manifold area

172 from 03 plate have it as standard iirc but some have it on 51/02 plates
As said a dog of a 182 needing a cambelt can be had for a price of a mint 172 (mines for sale)
Hi mate i would get something a bit cheaper. and keep some money for if something goes wrong for me i would have one with the cambelt and all servicing already done. bit like mine thats for sale.
hi and welcome try green light, bell, or churchill (im with them and im only 21, 20 when i had my 172) no differance in insurance. my 172 is up for sale by the way
