could be the firmware of your drive, used to have those problems all the time, till i upgraded the firmware, worth a shot.

don't think any routers work with a usb connection from the modem, you will need to have a modem with an ethernet connection or buy a router with a modem bulit in. www.dabs.com have a few for a decent price.

i use AVG pretty good and its free. but cheap if you want to buy it

Cheapest you will get is play.com 54.99 but they never have it in stock, try gameplay or something like that, but most places are £60. I would just stick with the adapter mate just plug and play instead of buggering around with anything else.
