Yeah it needs to be jailbroken. When you do jailbreak it youll need winterboard (get through cydia) and then you just download themes from cydia and apply through winterboard, pretty simple process. Iv yet to find a decent theme so iv left it stock :(

If you're not too fussed about keeping history info and whatnot you could try the private browsing option (safari bit in the settings) that might help it and it'll save having to clear the cache all the time.

Did you try a different USB cable? Even if its still charging the wires responsible for the data transfer might have split, the cables pretty crap and they do break easily iv gone through loads! On Virgin Media 30Mb(to be doubled soon!), can't really fault them so far, great speeds and rarely cuts off. The Virgin media super hub isn't the best, but it does the job I suppose. They're good if you're in an area that can't get good speeds through ADSL (I could'nt get more than 1Mbs before).
