There is no way in the world that the safely remove hardware thing would affect a memory card. hard drives maybe, but not cards - and certainly not unless you were copying ONTO the card, not reading off.
Ive had a machine that did that.
pull it all apart, and start from bare bones (just motherboard and 1 stick of ram) then build it back up bit by bit. eventually you'll find the part thats shorting the lot.
also pull all the hard drives/floppies/cdroms.. etc
Vista has many many more problems than that, and IE7 is littered with security holes.
XP will be the last microsoft OS that I use. Once Vista is out I'll be looking elsewhere.

If you are going to do any homebrew on the DS you will need:
A "pass" device
A "media storage device" such as a supercard or a mass media dock, or m3 or whatever
some software

Connect your pc up to the usb thing, and get the nintendo wifi usb dongle from somewhere like game, or amazon. That will be your easiest bet if you only want to use wireless for the DS :)
What model is the router you are using? I'll check the connections - I've not seen a wireless router with a usb port before, except for ones that connect to the speedtouch usb modems, and that usb port is nothing to do with pc connectivity.
And no you do not need an ethernet card to have wireless.
