you do need to weld them, they will eventually cause wear on the wishbone or subframe side. i've seen pics of what happens when you don't tack weld them. just trying to find some...
edit: welding just for the wishbones, the others don't need it
i can see a washer :rasp:
but the more i think about the bush the more i think you're right and the taller end should be against the gearbox. if you look at the oem bush, it has a taller side, and that side is against the gearbox. i've had mine fitted with the shorter side against the gearbox...
Renault bore 60.1mm, five quid on ebay for a set. You'll obviously need to measure the bore on the alloy too. 73.1mm?

the problem with fitting it the same as the picture, is that the dog bone itself is further from the gearbox and the upper part of the bush will flex about. that's my take on it
my instability at speed (lightness on the front, wandering) was caused by unevenly worn tyres on the front. you couldn't see the uneven wear, but when i put the rears on the front the problem went away :)
pic on left shows column into u/j, and a gap with play, pic on right shows it welded up to remove play.
is this column to u/j the same for the 172 (actual pic is a '96 clio)
thanks
listed in wrong section, but a potential bargain

i've since discovered that it's not what's causing my problem. even with both tie rods disconnected from the hubs, i can still feel feint knocking so it's either column or rack
with regards to tool to remove tie rods, i did what fred did, i got a 32/36mm viscous spanner. they are much narrower...
lots of people wondering about the inlet plenum/manifold/intake/runners/etc and the correct name for it. i've just been reading about them and this is what i've found:
the inlet plenum and inlet manifold are the same part on the clio. the plenum is the rectangular box part with the renaultsport...
these two links are the funniest things i've ever read on the internet. don't worry about the gumph underneath the headshot, just start reading from the "From:" at the top of the page
