Gearbox oil replacement for Clio 172

For best protection use 5w-40 synthetic (Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 or Motul 300V 5w-40) in the engine and fully synthetic 75w-90 in the gearbox (Silkolene Syn 5 75w-90 or Motul Gear 300 75w-90). These products are proper fully synthetics (pao/ester) Cheers Simon

    Which Oil?

Actually, this time of year 5w-40 is better for the engine. Less wear on cold start. Don't use 15w-50 unless the car is very heavily modded and running higher oil temps. Cheers Simon

Oils - Viscosity Loss, an explanation

It depends on the quality of basestocks used, not all synthetics are synthetic, some are "hydrocracked" petroleum oils. Cheers Simon

Oils - Viscosity Loss, an explanation

It depends on the quality. If they have identical composition then there will be no difference. 5w flows more quickly when you turn the key in any temperature and therefore less engine wear. 90% of wear occurs on cold start. Cheers Simon

Oils - Viscosity Loss, an explanation

Why do oils lose viscosity with use? Viscosity Index Improvers. An oils viscosity will decrease as the engine temperature rises. Viscosity Index Improvers are added to reduce this thinning. They are a key addative in the production of multigrade oils. VI Improvers are heat sensitive...

Don’t ask oil questions - look here!

Its not uncommon for OEMs to give the same recommended oils for a range of cars as this is what they are tested on and it keeps things simple. 10w-40 semi-synthetic is in effect a minimum standard or adequate oil. 5w-40 being synthetic is always the best option unless the engine is in a...
