On the menu bar of Outlook 2013 you should see a SEARCH tab when you enter a search term. If you select that then click "Include Older Results" does it return what you are looking for?

Ok, good luck. From what you are describing you want to create a work item on emails. That's what tasks are for. AFAIK there is no way to add a note to a mail item. You can add flags and reminders etc. but it doesn't sound like these will be suitable either.

Just create a task from it. Drag the email to tasks - it will create the item and add to your to-do.
