Yeah the L series stuff is fapping expensive, i've managed 2 so far, the wife has no idea what they cost - i'd lose my nads if she found out, bless her she thinks the 100-400 L IS USM cost 350 quid :o Its worth the premium though, got some fabulous shots in Kenya this year.

The missus bought one of those from a shopping channel last week, she paid about £125 for it though, works well, and has a snazzy remote that clips underneath the unit.
Theres plenty of decent software out there and its all free.
For viruses try AVG free edition, performs well and doesn't hog resource like Norton does.
For a decent firewall try Zone Alarm, again free and works well.

I had a Netgear one, it was so f**king useless that i eventually grabbed one end firmly and whacked it against the edge of my desk until it broke into 3 bits, replaced it with a Linksys, wired/wireless router with firewall, its never given me a second of trouble.
