But this scores the piston rod :( soak them in wd40 overnight, remove next day and whip them down to the local tyre fitters if the top cat won't undo with the traditional deep ring spanner and alan key.

I am sure you can get a second hand cup spring very cheap - possibly free mate.

MOT stations with there own garage should always be used with caution!!

That is crazy price!!! I know you said you don't like doing stuff your self but changing a track rod and fitting a spring is not difficult.
