I used 5mm spacers on mine, and it handles great. Just make sure you buy very good quality spacers (not those universal-fit ones with loads of holes in).
the 172 def. has; the 16v i couldnt see one, but like i said its pretty mucky, so could well have. the haynes manual does say one of the models doesnt have a level gauge, not sure what one tho, could well be the 16v, but then haynes arent always right!
I did mine and im no mechanic. But I did have the luxury of doing it while the rad was out as well. Getting the tools to tighten the belt was hard work tho.
you have to clean the screen before you stick it on ;)
Seriously, I had to prise mine off when i needed to replace it. Those little sticky pads are damn damn sticky.
chip has it right. you loosen the allen bit in the middle, then, using a spanner, turn the outer nut, when the belt tightens, you need to tighten the allen bit to secure it. It doesnt take much movement on the outer nut to tighten it. How much play is left on your belt? and how did you get an...

lol, exactly right. My hands were so cold I had trouble with those springy clips that hold the rad pipes on, who thought those stupid things up? Whats wrong with jubilee clips?
