Chris, if your engine's not running you'll have no power steering. Sounds pretty much as though your engine cut out. I'd be wondering why this happening rather than tracing a problem on the steering.

No point buying a Renault exhaust which will be more expensive anyway than a better built custom one. Custom version will be stainless steel and Renault's mild steel (MS will rust through way way quicker). Take a trip to Cardiff my friend, see Charlie at Prospeed, you might even see Charlotte...
I'd love a Williams as I think it is more of a head turner than my 172, only bettered by the V6 IMHO. Would be put off by the age now. I don't fancy another winter of fixing a broken car! Williams as a spare car, defo.

I seem to be getting less mpg now it's turned colder. Mines dropped from high 30's to mid 30's - 35 mpg last time I checked. Anyone else seeing a drop to match the change in temperature?
Cheers Rob669
Cheers 172muscle, welcome. Only thing I'd add is that you need to know where all the Shell or BP garages are if you go for just one brand. I was almost out of juice in St Austell, Cornwall recently and was told I'd have to drive miles to find the next Shell station. Had to buy some duff stuff...
I'll get my hammer ready then! Bloody 'ell!! If they are right, surely they fit in?
Al-Fredo style, I like it Omar. Not sure I fancy running without all the bits attached though Fred.
So 1mm to be removed is it, I take it from the sides of the backing plate do I?
My 172 does this a bit, although the revs do change on the counter when it's happening. Not a problem though. This is my first winter with mine so I'm interested to see if it gets worse on colder days.

The time has come to check my front brake pads, so I think I might as well change them while they're out. Bog standard Ferodo's from Halfords or something more lush, your thoughts?
It's a 172 by the way.

I've only ever used 95 RON once and it was ok really. Only went as far though as the first Shell garage I came to and then filled up again with Optimax. Tried BP 97 RON and the car was lumpy but it might have been a poor batch or something. Sainsbury's 97 seems ok - and I use it if I've spent...
A really basic question: gaz coilovers seems to be a shock absorber and spring, so if you fit them in place of the standard shocks what do you do with the original springs?

I've been using the Autoglym brake dust remover for alloy wheels. Works ok, though I've a few baked on marks that won't shift so I'll give this stuff a try - and I need to clean the loo so it's a bonus!
It's easier than that. No need to ruin a good coat hanger I think. Do it during daylight and if you are looking from under the wheelarch (removing the wheel makes the job easier) you'll see the hole clearly in the bulkhead. Hardest part is getting the cable through the small white hook on top of...
I think this thread has gone off track somewhat.
You can't take an oil reading until the engine has been off for a while, half an hour maybe. I know the dip stick is small but it should still give you a decent reading of what's in your engine. Hope that helps?
If it's a none std cable then your lucky it worked at all. Has to be a genuine Renault part for your specific car. Don't waste your time with one from Halfords, I did and lost best of a day wondering why my car didn't work. Fitted the right part and it felt like new!
AcID, like the man said, it's most likely the joints. I can't see how the actual rest of the part would wear. Why not fix it yourself if the cars going up in the air again? Getting your hands dirty is part of the fun!
Good luck either way.

I had this problem too. It was in an RSi 1.8 with the three dash board mounted gauges, same as those fitted to the 1.8 valver.
I had a higher oil pressure level in winter than summer. I found running it with non-synthetic oil was a bit better and the engine was quieter too. Basically, I...
As the South West airfield events show, it's mostly down to who drives the hardest and the most efficiently - rather than the car. I reckon a lower weight car or even 10% more power won't make that much of a difference for cars of a pretty similar power to weight. No diff between any of 'em...
Be very careful about tightening the guide pins (bolts). I easily stripped the thread on one last time! Ideally use a torque wrench to do it. Locking glue is recommended too.
I got a 2000 X plate for more than 5K. But it had only 28,000 miles on the clock and was in v.good condition. Why not buy a Cup 172, that's what I'd do next I think.
Hope that helps.
Are you absolutely certain you need to upgrade? Autocar magazine reported in July 2000 that the 172 will outbrake a 911 Turbo and 360 Modena. I've always found the brakes to be excellent and I keep an eye on my rear view mirror when braking hard - in case the car behind can't match me.
He hasn't fitted a genuine Renault cable! It's easy to replace the cable, about 1.5 hours work. But you must use the genuine Renault part. Find an independant specialist for Renault's, see Yellow Pages. But much better to do it yourself. Not difficult to do if you take your time.
