I still don't think Linux is ready to be used on the desktop by everyone.
I've been using Linux for years now (I think 6 or 7?).. on my own machines and on production servers, and I still wouldn't run it on my everyday desktop. It runs on my servers, sure.. but desktop? No..
I use Windows...
More power to OSX. OSX is actually the only alternative most current users would use instead of Windows on their desktops.
And don't be saying I'm talking rubbish - I see it every single day. I'm an IT consultant and everyone uses Windows with a few MacOS users thrown in.

You could
a) look at your default gateway (Start->Run. cmd. ipconfig) and http://ipofgateway/ and it'd probably work.. then try and login
b) ask your friend politely for access.
c) get your own connection

You could, but depending how strict your IT usage policy is, you could get into substantial amounts of trouble..
Your company may also have a proper application layer filter (like, ISA or something) so they'd be able to see what sort of traffic is being passed anyway.. (and probably block it)

But.. don't do anything to that disk. :p Just put a new drive in, get windows on it.. and then slave that disk and restore to new disk.
I think you'd struggle.. they use Xeon's for one thing, and they ain't cheap.
