Welcome along mate! You'll not go wrong for help on here, I've learned so much about fixing them since I joined! RE: the window mech, its usually a white bit of plastic that fails inside the door (they're famous for them) that breaks causing havoc with the wires that tend to raising/lowering...

Andy, i'd actually have it diagnosed before you do anything mate! An hour's labour or so is nothing to lose to find out if it is royally fecked!

The benefit of buying a non-cup packed car is the choice of coilovers is greater due to the bolt spacing AFAIK. You can add a Cup spoiler and paint the wheels and pretend.
