When is a 172 cup due a cambelt change?

Smaller belt and less tensioners to worry about i think, plus its the shear fact it takes less time to do so cuts down on labour(again 'i think')

K-tecs start at £230 full stainless steel, or you can get sportex/ashley systems on ebay for £150ish but they are mild steel.

    Exhaust issues again.

Mine has done this a few times, the moisture seeps through and wears the paste, so i think a proper gasket may be needed.

    fitting a new exhaust...

You will still have to either cut the back box off or drop the rear beam to get the old system off. Had a k-tec stealth on my last one and it was great, a little quiet however.

    fitting a new exhaust...

Te rsi will need to back box cutting off as its a complete system from the cat back, the join at the cat is a donut shaped clamp, best to get a new one as you have to bend it to remove it.
