FYI this does throw an error up on the diagnostics.
When I had my last one I unplugged the flap & when it broke down they mentioned it was showing exhaust flap error.
Happens on my car (with 6k on the clock)
Happened on my golf, and my brand new mini before that, so i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it's something that can happen to most cars :-P
Depends on a load of variables, torque, driving style, how enthusiastic a driver you are, I know someone who goes through a set of rears in 4k miles.
Mine last circa 12k
