'Downgrade' to the D50 and get the lens. I have a D50 and dont find it to bad at high ISO. If you can afford it though, go for the D300. Im getting one in 7weeks when i go to New York:D

Ahh yeah there for the flash so you can have it off camera. Like this guy... Have you got a flash with it?

Does the wire look like that? Im not sure now, it might be a sync lead for the flash.

The cable is more likely to be remote shutter release. Does it have a screw type thread on th end? Is there a hole on the shutter button? If so, it should screw in there and you can do long exposures without touching the camera.

search google for 'tethered shooting' Nikon capture can do it with d40 i think, not tried it get though. Or just found Nikon Camera control pro which is only 50quid.

yeah plus i find that the 50mm f1.8 tends to hunt for ages before it locks on. Only really use it in studio in manual focus mostly for portraits.

Yeah the kit lens is good but if your wanting to get different lens it a fair bit of money as you'll need to get lenses with the motor in. The d40/x doesnt have a motor in the body. Thats partly why i got the d50 over the d40 even though the d40 is newer. Both great entry level dslr's,good for...
