Try the battery hooked up to another car if it works it's something else. If not then I'm guessing the Alternator.

I do, dunno why. it's more a habit because I used to drive at night a lot. Helps with visibility if you have a dark (Grey or something) car on dreary days too. And on the motorway. It's not like they annoy/dazzle anyone during the day.

One of the splines isn't meant to move. The one furthest to the left (If you looking into the engine bay) it's just there to anchor the first wiper. Did you make sure to push down on the sprung bit of the wiper when you tightened them ? they kind of arch up a bit so you've got to push down on...

I just bought 2 new standard ones.. Gonna cable tie some cheap sockets in them and hope for the best :dapprove:
