Correct a few areas will receive 50mb broadband speed due to the fact they lay there own cables etc... Only problem is what i said above.. Most areas are still a BT stronghold with there crappy copper wires.

Simple don't get it just yet.... wait a while! Things are moving forwrad in that department every week it seems.
There speeds are nowhere near what they say they are. Its even worse than normal landline broadband.

Speedtest is not always accurate though... it makes it look pretty etc but can give very inaccurate reading sometimes!
That other test site is good as it uses 2 files to download and calculates the speed that way.
Speedtest.net and other sites can sometimes make your speed way too good...
This country will no way get 100mb speeds until BT's Mononpoly hold on the network is crushed.
Bt owns all the telephony rights etc for the uk right? All the other broadband providers are unbundled to either LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) or OLO (Other licensed Operators). These are in effect...
Try using this for your speedtests and see how it compares out of interest

Id say he is not getting 23mb as the virgin 20mb offer is a bit of a farce. The modems customer side etc can handle it but the hardware on there side is not capable of acheiving such speeds. (at the mo)
All the hardware and cabling is pushed to its limits at the moment so id be surprised if...

Personally id say get rid of the home hub! They are crap for the reasons you state, Locking up.
Had no end of problems with my one. Main thing that really gets my goat is that it cant act as a print server! (well it can but its fussy!)...

I have have a press at work so did them here. It was piss easy...apart from the fact that they supply 2 circlips with the bearing so i stuidly thought "ooo one goes at the bottom to hold the bearing in" ...lo and behold when i went...
When mine was under warranty still, it was in the dealers 4 times for the same problem. They carried out some kind of modification to it (il find the document someware later) Still bloody does it though! Ive got used to it but am going to check it out myself soon.
