    i took it off now and then but havent for ages, i had the inlet off for a bout 3 days to do most of it with sand paper, but just leave it on when polishing!! just take the engine cover off.

    the petrol will cost you about £50ish maybe a bit more there and back mate in a 172 posting may be the better option.
