If the display is only showing time and temperature then you're correct, it's not been wired properly. It's common for this to happen on after markets. I'd stick with the aftermarket regardless mate.
Take a picture if your wiring and post it here.

Once you're in the correct forum/area, if you look to the top right of the website, just under where it says your name, inbox, alerts.. you'll see a 'Post Thread' button! :D
On that note, email fetching also uses battery @Daniel - the fact you don't even read your emails renders it useless to have that function on in the first place!
Settings >Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data
I believe in iOS8 (I haven't upgraded yet) that you can see exactly what resources are using how much of the battery. Shouldn't it tell you in there? Bluetooth would reduce battery life as it's very similar to wifi in the way it's always searching for a connection & sending/receiving data or...
Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Turn off.
It's one of the main battery drainers.
Mine only ever goes on if I need the SatNav or fancy a bit of Tinder.
It's main use is for when you post on Facebook etc and it will then say;

Headlight bulb change time. I've done passenger side by removing air intake etc but there isn't enough room to put the rubber seal back on so looks like the light unit has to come out! :(
