get a 50mm f1.4 and stop it down to f/2.0 which should give a nice narrow dof with the in focus bit being critically sharp and will also remove the need for flash

E510 is miles better than the 400d! 400d is more comparable to the E410 which is just about to be replaced by the E420 which I had a play with at a preview at the weekend and is SUPERB!
