Your car looks well low in the pic and you mention its got weight in the back, On all cars from the factory the back is a lot higher than the front, Im pretty sure this is to make them more stable / safer. Could be an issue ?
Mine had odd gaps on delivery, bigger on the passenger side. It got worse over time but was corrected when the bumper had to come off for engine work. You could get a finger down it but now its nearly flush.
Might be worth knowing that the alternator belt should be changed at 36K or 2 years...
The shift light disappearing coincided with an extra exhaust emissions sensor being added.
A number of things changed arround the start of 2001 for cost cutting, no alloy bonnet, no alloy spare.
Mine was October 2000 built September, I think one of the first non silver ones and has alloy...
When I first got my valver I wanted a second key coded, the car went round the back of the dealers and next thing I knew neither key worked.
After a day they of messing with it they tried to fob the car back to me without the plip working, i.e car would run but no central locking /...
Dont want to confuse things but ... I thought that if the car had ABS & EBD then it didnt need a brake bias valve ? i.e. the electronics sort out not locking the rears up regardless of load, without the sensors (i.e. a cup) you need something mechanical to adjust the bias ?
I had a valver for 4 years and the 172 for three now. As said the valver is definitely more hard core and suits a driver that way inclined, more involving to drive but a lot more effort. The 172 is more fun and effortless.
Dont want this to come out the wrong way but for every female I know I...
Not entirely sure how the alternator belt coming adrift would harm the cambelt ? I thought the cambelt was behind a cover, the belt moving off the alternator etc still wouldnt put it near the cam belt ? Out of interest had the alternator belt been changed ever, supposed to be done 36K or 2 years...
Have you seen pics of the Dieppe factory where they make the RenaultSport modles?, aint no robots there, it looks like a big old shed with car bits scattered about ! :)
I have a great VHS somewhere, Performance car of the year 96 (I think) done by the old magazine (now EVO). Its great and has a Williams 3 as the budget entry, its constantly lifting a wheel and they have some great footage of it, I think they even manage to get the wheel to stop they have it off...
Well you can nearly see the underneath, an interesting pic anyway !

The water pump runs off the cam belt which is behind a cover. Wouldnt like to say what effect the accessory belt going would have. If it could damage the alternator or AC compressor then I would say its worth getting it done.
I had an accessory belt tensioner fail and this damaged the...
Accessory belt is every two years or 36k on a Mk1 172 (link to service book below). Not saying what they pulled is right ? I guess you were due the belt and a minor service...
Early (2000) ones like mine are CB0M. I think they also include CB1C, CB1S, CB1N & CB15. Those numbers were off a tech note for the F4R engine Clio from April 2001.
Without wanting to sound like a git or high and mighty, saying someone else wouldnt think twice so Ill do it just about sums up why the UK isnt a very nice place.
Although there are obviously only 172 Exclusives, it would be very interesting to know how many there were of the other colours. How many yellow ones ? Ive seen more exclusives than yellow 172s and no red ones other than mine(not that that means a lot).
Hi Mike,
I bought the car new 3 years ago ! October 2000.
Havent seen another Red Mk1 in the flesh but knew there must some out there !
Pity about the insurance.
Hi Paul, that sounds great, Im afraid the only one I have has got the car behind me on it.
The parade lap was good, we managed to get up a bit of speed a few times !:)...
So for the last year of the current clio their will either be no performance variant (excluding V6). A bit like when there was no valver for the last year of the Clio 1 (although I think that was down to the cost of making a valver bonnet for the revised fromt end, or possible emissions issues...
I bought my valver in June 96 and got a 1 year old one, at the time they had stopped making them and there were just a few brand new ones in the network. The ( March 96) price list said availability limited.
Local dealer had one in the showroom but wouldnt discount it and for some reason it...
The car has an immobiliser from the factory and the alarm (to make it Cat 1) is fitted to all uk 172s when they land off the boat. It should have senors on the windscreen pillars and an extra LED by the gearstick. Mine came with an istallation certifficate & codes, if your lucky they might still...
If you read the service book it actually says alternator belt is EVERY 2 YEARS ! or 36k. So by rights if your Mk1 172 is more than 2 years old it should have had a new alternator belt. Mine is on its third under warranty anyway so at least Im sorted ...
