    Poor Mans iPhone

Apple make more profit (51%) in the mobile phone industry than all the other mobile phone manufacturers combined. They targetted 10% of the market share in phones shipped as being a target, they're at 4%....which makes the 51% profit even more impressive. People will pay for a premium product...

Have you restarted it? Usually when this occurs, something in the OS has gone wonky and a reboot will fix it.

    Apple TV any good?

I'd forgotten how much I actually despise XMBC as an interface..... ...still the iPlayer addon is up and running, not very friendly to navigate (as per XMBC generally), but is functional.

    Apple TV any good?

works perfectly on our ATV2 untethered as well, held off doing it until there was an untethered jailbreak. You may end up with WiFi issues after jailbreaking, there is a fix for it: http://forum.xbmc.org/showpost.php?p=722357&postcount=39

    Nokia - Commercial Suicide?

They had no choice, using android would have presented a massive future problem should google decide to go into mobile phones in a big way, how could you possibly hope to compete with the maintainer of the platform. Ms was the only real option, it presents both companies with a massive...

MacBook, MacBook pro or just a laptop?

Oh dear, that sounds more like a hardware issue to me. I'd re-install (purely to take your current installation out of the equation), if it still happens then I'd take it back to Apple and get it swapped out, it really shouldn't be doing that. The machine isn't overly warm when it happens is it?

MacBook, MacBook pro or just a laptop?

That is very odd, when you say crashed, what exactly happened? Spinning beach ball? Completely froze? Kernel Panic (Very obvious, black screen telling to you reboot)? An application that freezes can be "force quit" by hitting command+option+esc or by going to the apple menu, depending on how...

MacBook, MacBook pro or just a laptop?

You're confusing Linux with POSIX. OS X is POSIX certified which means that it is unix compatible. The GUI is Aqua which is nothing to do with unix or Linux, it's the GUI layer that is what really sets Mac OS apart from everything else.

    iPad - Do i or don't i?

It's currently only mac/iOS to apple tv 2, I'm not sure how convenient it'd be streaming from mac to->iPad as you'd have to initiate the AirPlay viewing from the mac. Sounds like you want iTunes home sharing on the iPad in reality. Technically making an iPad/iPhone AirPlay client is a piece of...

    Wedding photography costs

You also need to factor in copyright on the images, a cheaper photographer may well retain copyright and will not provide you with the original high resolution images, you'll then have to order all prints through them, probably at a high premium per image. We're now at the point of looking for...

    VPN help required

As above, make sure that the router server side is forwarding everything to the server pc that it needs to, PPTP/IPSEC can be a b*****d because it (as pinko points out) GRE uses it's own protocol, depending on your router you may or may not be able to make it work. Also remember that your...

    Apple TV any good?

It's also apparently not very good, I know a couple of people with them and the list of problems, quirks and bugs that they have is enormous. It also doesn't help that boxee seem to have no interest in bringing the pc version up to the same version as the box version, at least if they did that...

    Internal Job Interview :-/

What gabi said, if you can't get through the interview without putting in bad words or slagging somebody else off then you don't deserve the job, I'd bin you straight away as a candidate. Do some research and tell them what they want to hear. As Swiss Tony would say, going for an interview is...

    iPhone 5?

This is why I'm an engineer and you're not. I suggest you go away and read up on what the bars mean and why you can infer nothing from them. You can quite happily have a full functioning call on 1 or 0 bars and a really shitty call on 5 bars.

    iPhone 5?

The "strength" meter is not a good metric for measuring call quality, all the manufacturers could do everybody a favour and stop showing them, you're either connected to the network or you're not. They're just a hang up from the analogue days...people have just come to expect to see them on a...

    iPhone 5?

It may be slightly bigger (0.2"), but it's also lower resolution than the iPhone 4. They can't increase the screen resolution, because they purposefully doubled the resolution in X & Y on the 4 so that it remained compatible with apps without having to do nasty scaling. Increasing the...

    iPhone 5?

I know somebody in Cupertino. I was most definitely one of the earliest people to see a 3G in the flesh after it was announced. Even despite the fact that it had been announced, I was not allowed to touch it or take photographs of it. (It had serial numbers etched into the glass). The people...

    Help with Broadband

Good luck with that one, you're still well within the limits that ofcom prescribe for a broadband connection. Remember they market broadband as "Up to...". What would be more interesting to know is your line stats, your router will be able to show them. Try http://192.168.0.1 (most likley...

    App development

Objective C is a superset of "C", it's unrelated (thankfully) to C++ and is properly object oriented. Don't waste your time learning C++ if you're targetting iOS because nothing in iOS is C++, it's either Objective C or C. If you really need/want to you can use Objective C++ (you just name the...

    New Macbook Air

Yes, the early ones had hardware issues that caused failures. All of them suffer from software problems which may or may not render your data useless. They actually mount a sparse image across the network which is always going to be more prone to corruption than using a network filing protocol.

    New Macbook Air

Yeah, problem is that it'll be sods law that it will b0rk when you need to rely on it. The fact that I've seen it spew is enough to make me nervous about it. I also know somebody else who had one which decided to lose its memory!

    New Macbook Air

    New Macbook Air

Firefox is a s**t browser, it was ok when it was the alternative to Internet explorer, but webkit pisses all over them all. Choose your poison, safari or chrome. I've used nothing but safari on the mac for years, since V1. I tried chrome on windows at work but don't really like its UI, so I...

    Apple TV any good?

I've been playing with ours more, it's a pretty nice piece of kit. The restrictions on viewing content however suck, only being able to view what's available through iTunes home sharing is crap because iTunes home sharing is crap (iTunes has to be running on the user account that you want to...
