Had a quick go at some headlight correction this evening. Got a tad bored and its something I have wanted to have a go at for a while! Used some Halfords 1200 grit to begin with, then went up to 1500 grit, which gave them a nice conistent misty look. I then used some Halfords cutting compound...

I have a very very similar problem and have pretty much done exactly the same as you to cure it as well. Driving me crazy! Next thing I am changing is the shafts, so I will let you know if it cures my problem, as it could be the resolution to yours :).
