    Sounds like an earthing issue. Very common. You'll likely have a corroded rear light connector, corroded earth from connector to chassis in the boot or a corroded bulb. Check these first, if hazard switch turns on and off its not faulty.

    I had it in my head you meant the rear boot lid. Yeah, connectors on the RHS behind the trim.

    Why take the boot apart? Remove the clips in the headliner and rear belt thrn pull it down. You'll have to force the glue slightly but it'll sit back.
