Do ph1 have the same immobiliser as the ph2? Have this issue on my cup sometimes. I just hold the interior door lock button down for 5 seconds and it resets and starts.

It’s like the 2.5 Impreza sti engine that were proned to headgasket issues. You can now pick these up for a lot less than the older 2 litre ones despite Subaru fixing the problem on the later cars. IMO it’s not just the inconvenience of having the fix - it’s the concern that it would happen...

Most places charge 300-400 for a map and then you’ve got the physical filter and pipe (granted not a lot) and the couple of hours labour to fit and sort. Plus it’s warranted. I don’t think it’s that bad!!
