Actually the aerodynamics of the estate were better, hence why they used it. IIRC the rule change was that rear wings were allowed after, so the estate's additional downforce wasn't an advantage any more.
I know the HSA speed championship has an MX5 class, A2.1, which is what my car is in, running 4th in the class, 20th in the championship under the last owner.
The fact I've just bought an MX5 should tell you how fun they are for the sort of stuff I've mentioned, although as above there are better cars if you want to win.
Yeah, like most things there's autosolo championships. For example ASWMC have an autosolo series.
Here's a mate autosoloing at Kemble, to give you an idea.
The problem with hillclimbs and to a lesser extent sprints, is the pitiful value vs. Seat time. In fact, when we were running the Westie, it worked out that we were spending more per minute of track time than the average F1 team. No joke.
I'd thoroughly recommend autosolos. They are somewhere...
The Volvo's front bumper doesn't quite line up with the wing any more where I twatted a cone with it on an autosolo, the MX5 hasn't got a straight panel on it!
Used > Bubblewrapped.
I've seen this actual car, it was at the Cornwall Cannonball. Owner gave not a single flying f**k. It sounds bloody epic.
I can confirm a quick stab of the throttle is enough to make a field full of people look around.
Aaah, T1Rs. There's your problem!
Neil was telling me the other day that when he was doing drag runs at Perran he was using 3 litres a run!
Mamhead hillclimb this weekend coming, lovely hillclimb, get on it!
Looks like Neil doesn't come on here any more, for updates follow his Facebook page for the car;

^Yeah, that's Neil's car. Thread on here is 'Rooby Clio 172', it's worth a read as it's essentially an entire Impreza chassis under a Clio shell and running decent power :)
The blue one belongs to @Brushwood69
