Yes, because the alternator isn't providing enough juice at low revs. When you rev, it speeds up and makes more power which is enough to trip the charging circuit on.

I've done it with my 1.2, on standard suspension. Parked it half on a kerb if I remember correctly.

The gearbox is different. I found the throw shorter on my 172 than my 1.2, but not hugely so.

If you have difficulty moving the stick far enough forward, you can chop a bit off the selector arm which brings the gearstick back a bit. I've not done it so I can't remember how much needs to come off, but it's worth asking around should you want to do it.

Follow the orange and yellow wire in behind the airbox and you'll find the motor eventually. It's held in with two bolts. The recirc flap is like a big letterbox, I'm not sure you've photo'ed it there, but you can reach it through the big hole in the back of the airbox.
