Small pipe that comes down towards the passenger headlight mate. That's if I remember rightly, been a long time since I had a 172.
Probably nothing do with it, but its worth checking, and your symptoms defo sound like an air leak.
But what if both wheels have an even amount of traction?
Power goes to both wheels, its just when one breaks traction, all the power will then go to that one wheel

If it had lost compression it would spin over faster than usual. If its just "dead" then it's gotta be the battery. They don't seem to jump start very well either.
