i didn't mean it like that. a 400d is around £350 and you'll be overwhelmed by that to start with.
By adding a 40d etc into the equation is just confusing you even more.

I'd go for the Nikon 55-200mm AF-S VR DX for about £100
If you're feeling flush, Get the Sigma 10-20mm HSM (mmmm) or the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm AF-S VR DX for about £250 each.
I didn't use a tripod for any of mine, although i did buy a gorillapod zoom out there.
Don't like the idea of carrying a massive tripod round with me tbh, and the gorillapod fits in my bag with all the other kit.
Only had the D40 about 3 weeks, but been taking pics on a compact camera for about 5 years.
Went up the Sears Tower and was disappointed - no open air viewing area so crap reflections for photos. John Hancock would have been a better choice.
What a great trip! Managed to wangle our way into the Virgin Club house at Heathrow before the flight, then flew and returned on upper class, the only way to travel ;)
Chicago is an awesome city, 4 days was long enough to see the sights, lots of walking and shopping. Most of the pics are taken...
