Some of the problem these days is the cheapness of the car.
If you bought a ph1 172 brand new for £17k, then the price of cams is not that bad.
Now you can pay less than a grand for a ph1 and the price of the cams is the same.
Have a search for the yanoo fast road shifter. I've got one and it's made the world of difference. Its an extra long gearstick, with shorter shift pin, and then I cut some off the linkage as well so the stick is angled towards the driver.

Have a look in the group buy section on the PMS short shifter thread. There is a photo instruction manual in that thread that will show you everything you need to know.
It's easy enough once the exhaust is out of the way. I managed to get it out just by dropping the exhaust a bit
I have ph2 rear lights on mine which I prefer. But every now and then I think about putting some originals back on.
The dashboard and steering wheels are the worst part of the ph1 if you ask me
