It's French, count yourself luck that is all that's wrong with it. In my first MK1 Clio, the hazard switch operated the wipers at full speed only, and the doors were permanently locked so I had to get out through the boot.

Just stick the palm of your hand over the end of the exhaust and make sure there are no gaps. If it splutters or the engine cuts out, it is fine. If it doesn't do anything then the gas is escaping elsewhere, hence you have a leak.
