i think they are D2S bulbs, They are a few places, the shops on ebay. Or just try on gsf or your local auto electrician. I think they are only about 50quid.

I always thought the rx-7 wankel engines where unreliable as hell also. The chevy blocks are common to get put in tvr's aswell.

would you have to use aftermarket ecu? if not then how expensive would it be really?

He might want to do his 172 at a later date, i would practise on a smaller less important car aswell.

You could probably do it cheap with a eaton from mini or merc. Use a decomprestion plate maybe. Hardest thing would be a custom bracket.

have these on my 106, epic in the wet and good in the dry probably better as a winter tyre. as gsd3 or toyo are slightly better in the dry.
