My only issue with Alpine headunits (and most others!) is that they still don't look great until you start paying a couple of hundred quid. Pioneer made some years ago that had a flush front (IIRC), which looked much less garish.
I use Sennheiser HD 25-SP II - excellent all round, a smidge on the bassy side but very revealing/rewarding sound & closed backed. Quite a few DJs used them & their bigger brothers.
For an audiophile sound, i'd go for Grados, but they're semi-open backed.
How thick is the wire & can you trace it back at all? Car manufacturers don't (IME) use bullet-connectors, so probably from something a previous owner had fitted. Definitely best off to cable-tie it up out of the way until you can investigate & remove.
In my 172 i'm toying with putting an amp under the passenger seat - will have to be a small model though, taking the place of the stock cd-changer that's fitted there.
I reckon most people just make up a board to fit to the rear seat(s).
My fiance has bought this phase 2 172 from the South West, think it's lived down here for a while, originally from the North West.
