i had to get my scissor jack out to get off a speedbump, trusty haynes manual under the wheel then drove off.. how embarrassing!!
No you dont... (not if they are already set up!)
I used to use a permanent marker - mark one of the castelations on the top ring, loosen the lower ring.
then count how many revolutions you lower the top one by. Leave the mark in the same place as it started and tighten the lower lockring...
about 70-75 mm.. it has been lower but had to replace the subframe due to too much scrubbage!
mines came of a megane scienic.. i just randomly ripped it of when getting a rear hub off a clio. i put it up against the clio and thought " i can make that fit!" :)
i think i paid £18 for hub and...

Seen you (i think) tanking down the tyrebagger just before you come to Blackburn.. I was just heading home from work.
I dont know yet, it's had the lump out for a rebuild so i guess it's the engine loom.. fancy a drive up again to help me do it winston?
p.s. i never used the steering rack and still have it if u know anyone looking for one.
