Yeah fire resist/magic resist on a shield would sort you out. You're weak against fire because it's pure damage as opposed to being concerned with draining stamina/magicka like thunder/ice

Cookie, it sounds like you need to re-think your game play tactics/character stats if you're that weak again mages. For example, I'm very weak against two handed weapon people, so to counter act that, I've got my conjuring ability right up and now just conjure something for them to batter...
