Without sounding condescending i assume you make money selling RS cars? Only reason why i ask is there are alot of bargains around aswell as sheds and they dont have that prestige of say M cars.
I never really felt the need for an iPad. But my mum has just bought a mini and it feels sexy. The screen is average thought which is disappointing, ill wait for a retina mini.
If the d5100 is still entry level ish I would be concerned about the ability to change settings outside of the menu. Better cameras have better buttons on the body, which come in handy when you get better as it saves going into the menu.

I have the x10 and it's awesome. The Af is ok on moving objects but not as great as an slr. I'm really impressed with the fuji filters and the processing. EXR works really well.
D40 served me well as a starter. Only issue was keep going into menus to change things and also high ISo noise. But as a starter camera there ace, but if. D5100 is a tad more than it might be better to purchase that.

Photography is an art and the tech specs wouldnt matter if your new. Depending what you want to do further on you may not need an DSLR. BUt the D40x must be cheap now so its worth considering
