You can get ultra sonic guages that work on plastics but tbh whne using a pc and not a rotary you will struggle to remove too much paint anyway
There are general guidelines on the amount of clearcoat on a car - you saw its use on the M3 Rich? The sides were only 90 microns compared to the bonnets etc which were 150+
The clearcoat thickness can be worked out by measring an area of paint that hsan't been clearcoated such as engine bay...

PC and FP2 everwhere else bar roof which got IP first
Wheels AIO and EGP
Tyres and arches powermax 3 and then megs tyre gel on tyres
Wirewool 0000 and nxt metal polish on zorsts

SSR 1 will remove light swirls on softer paints - that was the first product I used in the DVD Brun you should ahve seen a noticable difference?

Bit of a mammoth session yesterday down at an independent Porsche specialist in Wiltshire - 11 hours, 32 foam pads (cleaned after each short pass with QD and an m/f cloth) of which half my collection (about 60) were used.
The car itself is about 14 years old around 1600 kg and 350 ish bhp...
