This is what MSN think of the C172

10. Clio Renaultsport 172
Stripped of all but essential equipment this car is clearly aimed at those who take their fast cars seriously - but unlike so many go-faster variants, the Sport Cup is actually cheaper than several of its more mundane brethren. A...
yes, lets not forget - the mini is a good car, and maybe its victory was justified.
But the Clio hasnt really lost - it has strength of character, the most important quality of all, on its side. Sometimes that counts for more than outright speed or ultimate grip, or whats the most fashionable...
while its true that top gear is funded by the BBC, Im not sure that has much to do with the Minis victory. I suspect it has to do with their pro-BMW stance more than anything else...

what i mean is that everything has been so heavily styled to work visually with all the other parts of the interior (bit like the TT) to create the designers vision of a cool interior. As a result, anything that you do/ add to the interior will clash with the whats in there already (and will...
normal 172. Red one, like mine.
No offence to Cooper S-Boy (Simon), but I have a real problem with the minis interior style. Its very contrived; dare to add anything to it and you can imagine the cars designer having a fit at you meddling with his masterpiece. Its so cool and trendy inside...
I used magic, Rob!
I havent physically moved the post. Just put on a note on the original post in off topic to say its now here (i.e reply here, not there). So, yeah, I lied! :)
g
yeah, i guess that probably is the mother of all clues. Oh, and Forza, too!
Paddy - we lost because the mini had a better gearchange, we were noisy on the m-way, the steering is a little dead (agree) and the pug and mini felt like they were from a class above interior wise. So, we didnt really...
[moved from Off Topic]
In this months Top Gear. Shoot out between C172, Cooper something, Pug 206 180bhp.
We dont come 1st.
We dont come 2nd, either :(
But we win the hot hatch spirit/attitude award and that my friends, is all that matters:
"When wealth is lost, nothing is lost. When...
ahem...
Ive often found that my knob is too big and wont fit in my hand comfortably. Sometimes its too stiff, so I have to insert it gently into the second slot.
(Im sorry - it was difficult to write about the size of the gear knob without lewd sexual innuendo, so I though, oh just go for...
you should bear in mind I have three things in my favour (from their point of view, anyway):
1) Im 31
2) I have ten years no claims
3) I live in a zero risk area
Thats with Admiral, btw (I tried e-sure and they wouldnt quote me!)
g
i cant put my finger on why, but.... I always think the CTR lacks substance. Im not too sure what I mean by that, but its my gut reaction (and over-riding impression) when I see one.
g
Rob - its Autocar. The magazine that appraised the driver appeal of the new Jag from...the passenger seat. I wouldnt dwell on their figures too much.
g
hmm, ok, Ben, that and a bottle of red wine and its a done deal.
(an un-related aside, but as its my post I can do what I like. My mate recently advertised his Pug 306 1.4 with a blown engine. He got one call from a bloke who said If I come down and see the car, you will keep the seats in it...
yes, I was indeed jesting about turning my 172 into a Cup, but I was quite serious about trading it in for one.
And if I want to stick Cup badges on it, I damn well will (except I wont. Im not that sad!)
g
in the old days, when Alfa was even more stupid than it is now, they still made the old Bertone GTV for 18months after they started making the new Alfetta GTV. Same with their saloons - dont like the new one? Buy the old one instead. And they wondered why they never made any money.
g
slight problem. What about all the suspension tweaks and mods? Well need to do those as well. I know! Ill whack it against the kerb a few times and see if that helps. Sheesh, I am so smart!
g
lets just say that I was struck by temporary insanity, and I decided to buy another brand new reno at the weekend.
Would a dealer do me a straight swap for my C172 for a brand new Cup? If not, whats the maths involved to do the change? Im really warming to the Cup now.

I would say that they are probably fundamentally reliable (i.e it will start) but not very durable (i.e it will fall apart). But then thats true of almost every mass market European car. If you want absolute reliability, then buy a Mazda, or a Toyota or a Lexus.
If buy the Clio with the clear...
