If it's only in second it's probs unlikely to be the heatshield.
Do you have an autotrader/ebay/pistonheads ad or is it a local car?
Belts are the big one - cambelt every 5 years, auxilliary belt every three years.
Cambelt is a big job and needs to be done by a specialist. About a £400 job.
Usual checks for crash damage.
Make sure all gears engage...
