Could earthing (or lack of) cause this? It must be something simple to make it stop working like it has.

You could get belts done for £300 if not a little less so would still be good imo.

When mine started playing up it was the connector on the steering wheel column. The top just pulls off and you can see the connection. It came loose when I was trying to pick something that fell down the gap out.

Try Adrian Flux or something you will get it cheaper than that.

Still can't cost that much at 26 with 6 years no claims surly? £500-600 tops?
